9. Boston Terrier

The weight range of the Boston Terrier is extremely wide, ranging from 4.4 to 11 kg. They are canines who prefer spending a lot of time indoors and are content to spend the most of the day relaxing at home.

7. Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world and has been bred for more than 10,000 years. Its weight ranges from a tiny 4-7.2 kg. Shih Tzu also have a very long lifespan of between 10 and 18 years.

6. Pug

The Pug, a tiny dog that has a large personality, weighs between 6 and 9 kilogrammes. Chinese Emperors used to keep Pugs as lapdogs and treated them like royalty. Napoleons wife adored her pug so much she refused to have it sleep anywhere else except her bed with her.

5. Papillon

The only large feature of the Papillon is its ears. These canines can reach a maximum weight of 4.5 kg. Facts about Papillion’s are that were bred as ratters in order to rid homes of pests. No one truly knows where they originate from, and that their name means butterfly in French.

A fully mature Toy Poodle will only weigh 6-7 kg and is the third tiniest dog in our Top 10. The Standard and Miniature Poodles are the other two sizes. Poodles originally were bred for hunting purposes, hunting waterfowl and finding mushrooms due to their incredible sense of smell. They’re hyper intelligent and extremely healthy and get few illnesses.

3. Yorkshire Terrier

The second tiniest breed of dog, the Yorkshire Terrier rarely weighs more than 3.2 kilogrammes. They make surprisingly good guard dogs despite their diminutive stature. Facts about Yorkshire terriers include that they got their names during the development of Yorkshire in the Victorian period, taking on the name during the 1870s. Their coat has a similar texture to human hair, and they were first bred as working dogs, used to catch rats in clothing mills.

Our list of the world’s tiniest dog breeds places the Pomeranian, which weighs between 1.9 and 3.5 kg, second. Pomeranians are the ideal breed of dog for travelling with. Did you know Pomeranians come in 23 different colour combinations, and they once pulled sleds and herded Reindeer!

The Chihuahua is the world’s tiniest breed of dog in the world, weighing just 0.9 to 2.7 kilogrammes. A Chihuahua named Miracle Milly, who stood 3.8 inches tall and weighed less than 0.5 kg, holds the record for being the tiniest dog ever.
